Activities e Work Packages

The project activities include, among others: creation of a database on agronomic practices; creation of an IT tool for estimating the Carbon stock, credible and certifiable; validation of the system through field analysis; implementation of the system in 4 pilot vineyards of 3 agricultural companies (Castello di Albola, Ruffino 1877 and San Felice Wine Estates); Carbon Credits certification thanks to the support of Carbon Credits Consulting and placement on exchange platforms; monitoring of technical and economic results; transfer and replication of the system.

A complete digital platform will therefore protect and facilitate the correct management of agricultural practices and the calculation of carbon credits, based on an app that will integrate the most innovative algorithms based on international standards shared by the scientific community. It will be created by Image Line, an innovative SME that already involves an online community of 290,000 people (producers/farmers, agronomists/technicians, producer associations, but also the world of schools and research).

The app will be fully integrated with a blockchain platform, thanks to the support of EZ Lab France: the company, born from the many years of experience in web 3.0 technologies of the innovative SME EZ Lab Blockchain Solutions - will contribute in the future to validate the system also in the Champagne region where it is based.

1

Project management and coordination

Lead Beneficiary: IMAGE LINE

Start Month: 1

End Month: 48

The objectives of the WP1 are:

  • ensure efficient project management and communication within the Consortium;
  • ensure efficient scientific and technical coordination and monitoring of the project progress against the work plan;
  • assess risks and implement mitigation measures.
2

C FARMING data collection

Lead Beneficiary: CREA

Start Month: 1

End Month: 8

The purpose of this WP is to obtain a complete overview on vineyard management practices already implemented to maximise the SOC stocking capacity, for supporting the subsequent project implementation activities and provide vine growers with a technical manual on best management practices to increase SOC in their farms. The activity will provide a baseline and intervention scenarios delineation for the farms. To this end, in this WP, existing information on both farm management and the related pedoclimatic conditions which data refer to, capable of influencing the C sequestration potential, will be collected, organised, harmonised, and analysed to create a database and a technical manual.

3

C Farming IT tool

Lead Beneficiary: IMAGE LINE

Start Month: 6

End Month: 42

This WP aims to develop an IT tool to support vine growers to choose, implement and report sustainable soil management (SSM) practices aimed at increasing the stock of C. The expected output is an integrated web-based tool that can help farmers to:

  • estimate the SOC potential for each selected IA and SSM practice and choose the most effective practice in terms of SOC accumulation, according to the farming techniques already used and the pedoclimatic characteristics (DSS module);
  • calculate the BAU as the starting point or “baseline”;
  • automatically get output data reporting the SOC storage increase - compared to the BAU - as a result of the novel SSM practice adopted and recorded in IL’s QdC® - Quaderno di Campagna® platform (C MONITORING module)
  • georeferencing within each IAs, one or more sampling points (depending on the extension of the IA) to collect samples of soil for laboratory analytical tests (SOC increment) which could be required for the rectification/homogenisation of data derived from modelling.
4

Pilot action and tool validation

Lead Beneficiary: CREA

Start Month: 8

End Month: 48

The aim of this WP is to test and apply in vineyards the sustainability (technical feasibility and economic viability) of a business model based on C farming and exploiting the innovative C farming IT tool developed in WP3 to quantify or estimate the improvements on SOC levels. The on-site measurements are needed to calibrate and validate the Roth-C model.

5

C stocking certification and development of a business model

Lead Beneficiary: Carbon Credits Consulting

Start Month: 6

End Month: 48

The objective of this WP is to certificate the C credits generated by the pilot farms, through a standard methodology and protocol, adopting Carbon Standard procedures. The expected result is the conversion of C stocking into “certified” C credits, ready for sale within the voluntary carbon market, thus creating the conditions for additional income for the farms involved (business model).

6

Monitoring

Lead Beneficiary: CREA

Start Month: 1

End Month: 48

The objectives of the WP are:

  • to assess environmental effects of C farming practices
  • to assess economic impacts of the business model on the pilot vineyards

The expected results are:

  • to create a set of indicators for environmental monitoring specific for vineyards
  • to assess environmental effects of C-farming practices by applying the set of indicators identified
  • to evaluate the practices proposed by using a multicriteria approach including all the identified indicators
  • to evaluate benefits and drawbacks of best practices systems on environmental sustainability
7

Sustainability, replication and exploitation of project results

Lead Beneficiary: IMAGE LINE

Start Month: 6

End Month: 48

The objective of the WP is to promote transferring and replication of the project results at regional, national and EU level. Communication and Dissemination activities are a crucial part of the project and they are intended to:

  • inform the wide public about the existence of the project and its goals by keeping citizens up-to date with ongoing developments, activities and results obtained
  • explain to other stakeholders in the EU wine sector how they can be direct beneficiaries of project results by transferring all outcomes through a technical dissemination
  • networking with other projects to sharing know-how, experience and expertise
