Grapevines, like all plants, play an important role in the carbon cycle: they absorb carbon dioxide (CO2) during photosynthesis and use it to grow and develop. Vineyards - and other agricultural crops - can therefore be organized and managed in such a way as to promote the conservation and accumulation of carbon in the soil and vegetation, removing it from the atmosphere.
The adoption of these practices not only helps the environment by reducing the climate impact, but can also improve soil quality and the long-term sustainability of the wine sector.
The project sees Image Line as the leader of a consortium of research centers, including CREA Agriculture and Environment (CREA-AA) and CREA Policies and Bioeconomy (CREA-PB), some wineries in Tuscany and Veneto, farmers' associations, innovative SMEs and consulting firms.
What distinguishes the LIFE VitiCaSe project from other experiences in the Carbon Farming field is the integrated approach that takes into account all the phases of the process, from the study of the various sustainable soil management practices, to the measurement of impacts with the support of digital tools, up to the generation and sale of carbon credits certified according to the most authoritative international standards. The aim of the project, in addition to demonstrating the effectiveness of these agronomic practices in combating climate change, is also to make the process of certifying the quantities of sequestered carbon easier for individual or associated agricultural companies, and thus create a new business model linked to Carbon Farming.
It is therefore a real open innovation project, in which entrepreneurial entities – Image Line, EZ Lab France, Carbon Credits Consulting, together with the wineries Castello di Albola, Ruffino 1877 and San Felice Wine Estates – collaborate with research centers – CREA Agriculture and Environment and CREA Policies and Bioeconomy – making use of the direct support of producers represented by the Provincial Farmers Union of Siena (Confagricoltura).
